Technical requirements:
Minimum browser version:
Firefox 1.0
Internet Explorer 4.0
Mozilla 1.7
Safari 3.0
Chrome 8.0
Playing sounds:
Sounds will play best with Real player Quicktime (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/).
You can designate the sound player which your browser will use. Below are the directions for designating some of the common players to handle the dictionary’s .mp3 files. In the entries below, we use the ">" sign to mean that the item after > is a submenu or choice from the item preceding it.
WINDOWS
In each case go to START > PROGRAMS and open up the particular audio player. Then use its menu choices to make the settings.
Windows Media Player:
TOOLS>OPTIONS > FILE TYPES > check MP3 > OK
Real Player:
TOOLS > PREFERENCES > CONTENT: Media Types > ADVANCED > make sure that MP3 is checked * > OK > OK
* Note: it may say "currently assigned to Windows Media Player" or something similar
iTunes:
EDIT > PREFERENCES > check "use iTunes as the default player for audio files" > OK
QuickTime **:
EDIT > PREFERENCES > QUICKTIME PREFERENCES > FILE TYPE ASSOCIATIONS (this may be a drop-down menu) > select MP3
** Note, with QuickTime, the audio files don't play
automatically, you need to click the Play arrow each
time.
MACINTOSH
Real Player:
PREFERENCES > MEDIA TYPES > select SMIL
QuickTime:
PREFERENCES > QUICKTIME PREFERENCES > PLUG-IN MIME SETTINGS > select MP3
iTunes:
PREFERENCES > GENERAL > select “use iTunes for internet music playback”
Known issues:
While all browsers will display the word forms, Mozilla Firefox is unable to play sounds for many word forms
